Reactive Lesions of the Oral Mucosa Flashcards
what tissue is keratinised and what tissue isnt?
give example of where you can find each one in the mouth?
Left = non-keratinised
B mucosa, floor of mouth, soft palate
Right = keratinised
Hard palate, keratinised,
what is each layer?
what causes elongation of rete ridges?
hyperplasia of basal cells
what is acanthosis and what causes it?
acanthosis causes darkening & thickening of skin
its caused by hyperplasia of stratum spinosum
what is ATROPHY in epithelial reactions?
reduction in viable layers
what is EROSION in epithelial reactions?
partial thickness loss
what is ULCERATION in epithelial reactions?
full thickness loss with fibrin on surface
What is dysplasia?
disordered maturation (growth) in a tissue
Cellular atypia - changes in cells
what are epulides?
soft tissue swellings on GINGIVA ONLY
what is a pyogenic granuloma, where can it be found and what causes it?
Granulation tissue
Found - any mucosal site
Cause: trauma
what is a fibroepithelial polp?
a type of reactive hyperplastic lesion usually caused by trauma.
Hyperplasia through fibrin deposition
what medications can cause fibrous overgrowths?
- antihypertensives
- anti-epileptics
- immunosuppressants
