Austria’s reaction
they were angered by the prevention of anschluss with germany under article 80
Hungary’s reaction
they were shocked and felt betrayed. their aim was to undo the terms of the treaty of trianon and gain back their territory
Bulgaria’s reaction
there was talk of resistance among the army and nationalists , however the prime minister Aleksander Stambolski refused this he believed that the treaty could be changed peacefully in time.
turkish reaction
the rebel government that was set up by Mustafa Kemal was determined not to accept the treaty.
Germanys reaction
it was a deeply traumatic blow to germans of all classes. they resented in what they perceived to be a dictated peace. they resented

- the burden of reparations that were considered savage and would burden the german economy for generations to come.
the loss of land in east Germany to the poles because the poles were seen by german nationalists as of lower civilization
- the occupation of the rhineland
frances reaction
they did not receive all they had hoped for and french public opinion were convinced that france had not secured the necessary terms to secure its safety. they blamed the naive idealism of britain and the USA
Britain’s reaction
they believed that the french stubbornness had prevented the negotiation of a moderate and lasting peace
Italy’s reaction
the peace treaties were regarded by many italians as a mutilated victory the italians had suffered high causalities and not been awarded what they had been promised by the treaty of london 1915
Italy’s claims to parts of Dalmatia , Albania , Fiume , Adalia had been denied
To them it appeared that other countries particularly yugoslavia had gained at their expense
the USAs reaction
by january 1920 the treaty had been approved by all signatory powers except the US. the USA feared that if they joined the league they would be committed to defend the independence of other league of nations members from aggression
Many Americans believed that the terms were too harsh on Germany and that it would cause resentment.
Japans reaction
the Japanese gained much of what they had wanted in the versailles treaty however it was viewed with mixed feelings. their failure to gain a clause in the convent of the LON guaranteeing racial equality which was blocked by britain and the USA was seen as a great humiliation by all political parties in japan.
