Q

Which electrode is connected to which terminal of a battery and its colour?

A

The negative electrode is the one connected to the negative terminal of the battery (Black). It is also known as a cathode.
The positive electrode is the one attached to the positive terminal of the battery (Red). It is also known as an anode.

Q

What happened at the negative electrode and and the positive electrode?

A

Negative electrode - the gas collected here was found to burn with a squeaky pop when tested with a lighted splint.

Positive electrode - the gas collected should cause the splint to burn more brightly, confirming that it’s oxygen.

Q

Electrolysis experiment conclusion?

A

Water has been spilt into its elements hydrogen and oxygen using an electrical current. It can be shown that the volume of hydrogen produced is twice the volume of oxygen produced, that is why the formula is H2O.

6
Q

Why are those metals stored under oil?

A

They are stored under oil, to prevent them from coming into contact with air (oxygen) and water. They are soft metals which can be cut with a knife.
