Reactions/Enzymes Flashcards
What is a cofactor
Non-protein component required to allow an enzyme to perform its role.
Bind w enzyme to promote enzymatic process
Types of cofactors
Inorganic ions: Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Mb
Organic (coenzymes): Typically derived from vitamins
Transferase
Transfer functional group from one substrate to another
Rxn: Substitution
Hydrolase
Break bonds using water (hydrolysis)
Rxn: Aceyl substitution (adding water to do breaking)
Oxidoreductases
Catalyze REDOX reactions
Transfer of e- from one substrate (reductant) to another substrate (oxidant) H&O
Rxn: REDOX
Lyase
Break chemical bonds (not hydrolysis or REDOX)
Catalyze elimination reactions. Removing a group
Rxn: elimination
Ligases
Joining of two molecules together. Forms chemical bond between 2 subtrates.
Rxn: addition
Isomerases
Catalyze structural shifts (intermolecular group transfer)
Promote structural shifts in a substrate
Rxn: isomerization
