Reactions and The Law of Conservation of Mass Flashcards
What are the different types reactions?
Formation, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement and hydrocarbon combustion
What is a formation reaction?
When two elements react to form a compound
What is a decomposition reaction?
When a compound breaks down into its elements
What is a single replacement reaction?
When an element reacts with a compound to produce a new element and a new compound
What is a double replacement reaction?
When two compounds react to produce two new compounds
What is a hydrocarbon combustion reaction?
A reaction with oxygen (burning), contains hydrogen and carbon
What is the law of consideration of mass?
States that in a chemical reaction, atoms are not created or destroyed, the mass of the reactants is conserved in the products
What is added in front of any formula to balance the chemical equation?
Whole number coefficients
How many diatomic elements are there?
9
If the element on the reactant side is a metal it will switch places with what in the compound?
The metal
If the element on the reactant side is a nonmetal it will switch places with what in the compound?
The nonmetal
In double replacement reactions what in the reactants switches?
The cations
In what reaction type is it ok to use a decimal as a coefficient?
Hydrocarbon combustion
