Molecular and Ionic Compounds Flashcards
What is a molecular compound?
A compound composed of two or more non-metals
How do elements share electrons in molecular compounds?
Covalent bonds (share a pair of e-)
What state are molecular compounds at room temperature?
Solid, liquid or gas
Do molecular compounds dissolve in water?
Some do, some don’t
What happens if a molecular compound dissolves?
It will not conduct electricity
What are the prefixes for molecular compounds?
1- mono, 2- di, 3- tri, 4- tetra, 5- penta, 6- hexa, 7-hepta, 8- octa, 9- nona, 10- deca
How is a molecular compound named?
- write the first nonmetal name
- Add a prefix (unless mono)
- Write the second nonmetal with ide at the end
- always add a prefix
What is an ionic compound?
A compound composed of a metal and nonmetal
How do elements share electrons in ionic compounds?
Ionic bond (transfer e-)
What state are ionic compounds at room temperature?
Solid
Do ionic compounds dissolve in water?
Some do, some don’t
What happens if an ionic compound dissolves?
It will conduct electricity, electrolyte
How is an ionic compound named?
- write the cation name
2. write the nonmetal name with ide
What is the charge of ionic compounds?
Neutral
