Reactions Flashcards
What is the collision theory?
In order for a reaction to occur, molecules must collide together with sufficient force
Define activation energy
The minimum quantity of energy which the reacting substance must possess in order for a reaction to occur
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that absorbs energy from the surroundings
What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction that releases energy into the surroundings as heat or light
What is the rate of reaction determined by?
The number of molecules with sufficient energy for a reaction
Name 5 ways you can increase the rate of reaction
Increase the heat Increase the concentration Increase the surface area Use a catalyst Adjust the pH
Outline the ‘Lock and Key Model’
Also known as the enzyme substrate complex
What is Gibbs free energy?
The energy available in a substrate to do work, it determines the chances of a spontaneous reaction occurring
What does denaturation cause to occur in the ES-complex?
The substrate to be released as the shape of the active site is altered
What is meant by exergonic reaction?
Negative, spontaneous
What is meant by endergonic reaction?
Positive, not spontaneous
