Reactions Flashcards
How to measure rate of reaction?
Amount of reaction or product formed / Time
What are the three ways to measure rate of reaction?
1) Precipitation formed
2) Change in Mass
3) Volume of Gas
What is the collision theory?
The rate of reaction depends on how often and with how much energy the reacting particles collide with each other.
What factors affect the rate of reaction?
1) Higher Temperature
2) Higher Concentration / Pressure
3) Larger Surface Area
What is a Catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up or changed.
Why are catalysts useful?
1) They last a long time
2) Reduce activation energy
3) Increase the rate of reaction
What are the disadvantages to catalysts?
1) Initial Cost.
2) Contamination can poisoned by impurities so catalysts stop working.
Whats an exothermic reaction?
A reaction that gives out energy (heat) to its surroundings.
List 3 examples of exothermic reactions…
1) Combustion
2) Neutralisation
3) Oxidation
Whats the practical uses of exothermic reaction?
1) Hand Warmers
2) Self-Heating Hot Drinks
Whats an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that takes in heat from its surroundings shown by a fall in temperature.
Whats the practical use of exothermic reactions?
1) Sports injury packs that take I heat from the surroundings to become very cold - Convenient.
What affects the rate of reaction?
1) Temperature
2) Concentration / Pressure
3) Catalyst
4) Surface Area
