Acid, Alkalis, Bases And Salts Flashcards
Whats a base?
A substance with a PH greater than 7
Whats an alkali?
A base dissolve in water (PH greater than 7)
What ions do alkalis form in water?
OH-
What ions do acids form in water?
H+
Whats a reaction between acids and bases called?
Neutralisation Reaction
Whats the equation for reacting an acid and a base?
Acid + Base -> Salt + Water
Whats the acid and base reaction equation in terms of ions?
H+ + OH- -> H2O
What does Aq stand for?
Aqueous
Whats the equation for a metal reacting with a acid?
Acid + Metal -> Salt + Hydrogen
Why does copper not react with dilute acid?
It is less reactive than hydrogen
Metal oxides and hydroxides react with water to form what?
Salt and water
How do you make soluble salts using a metal, metal oxide or metal hydroxide?
1) Add metal, metal oxide or metal hydroxide to the acid. Solid dissolves.
2) Filter out excess metal to get pure crystals of salt.
Explain how you make soluble salts using alkali.
1) Add right amount of alkali to neutralise acid and need an indicator.
2) Measure amount needed and use this amount to avoid contamination.
3) Evaporate water.
How do you make insoluble salts?
1) Precipitation reaction.
2) Mix solutions with ions you need.
3) Filter, wash and dry.
Whats an acid?
A substance with a PH under 7
