Reactions 2 Flashcards
True or false: in a chemical reaction there is a change of mass.
False - this is called conservation of mass
What is combustion?
Combustion is burning, which is also oxidation.
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is where a substance reacts with and joins to oxygen.
What is exothermic?
An exothermic reaction is where overall the reaction gives out heat. For example: burning a substance.
What is endothermic?
An endothermic reaction is where overall a reaction takes in heat. For example: school ice pack
What is thermal decomposition?
Thermal decomposition is where you heat a substance up to break the bonds. An example is cracking: oils being heated up to produce different hydro carbons for fuel.
Do reactions use a transfer of energy?
Yes!
True or false:
Neutralisation reactions are always exothermic.
True: All neutralisation reactions are exothermic.
