Q

How can distillation purify substances?

A

When you use distillation it separates out two or more substances, meaning that once they have been separated they are pure. The separation happens as different substances have different boiling points.

8
Q

What is a compound?

A

It is two or more elements chemically bonded together. They have different properties from the elements that they come from.

9
Q

Do compounds have the same properties as their elements?

A

No. For example table salt is a compound made from chlorine, a toxic gas, and sodium, a metal that catches fire when it touches water.

Q

What is a molecule?

A

A molecule is two or more atoms chemically joined together. These can be atoms of the same element (e.g. O2 for oxygen) or atoms of different elements (e.g. CO for carbon monoxide)

Q

What is a mixture?

A

Two or more substances that are mixed but not chemically joined. You can get mixtures of elements (e.g. if nitrogen and oxygen mix they don’t react), mixtures of compounds (carbon dioxide in water - fizzy ‘carbonated’ water), mixtures of molecules (both of the above are mixtures of molecules) and mixtures of combinations e.g. a mixture of oxygen (molecules of an element) and water (molecules of a compound)

Q

How can you separate two liquids in a mixture?

A

Use distillation - each liquid has a different boiling point so collecting each one at a specific temperature when it boils allows you to separate the vapours (gas form of the liquids) and condense them back into the pure liquid.

13
Q

What is a pure substance?

A

A pure substance is when the substance is only one type of particle (atoms or molecules).

14
Q

What is the difference between a mixture and a pure substance?

A

A pure substance is made up of only one type of particle (atoms or molecules) whereas mixtures have at least 2 types of particle not joined together.

16
Q

True or false: a chemical formula shows all the elements present in their relative proportions?

A

True!

17
Q

Where are metals generally found on the periodic table?

A

On the left side generally.

18
Q

Where are non metals normally found on the periodic table?

A

On the right side generally.

19
Q

What is group 1?

A

The Alkali metals, they are reactive and react in water and oxygen. Oxygen - they are silver when they are cut, but then oxidise and become grey again.
Water - they fizz (produces a gas)

20
Q

What is group 7?

A

Group 7 are non metals called the halogens, they are non metals. (After the stairway)

21
Q

What is group 0?

A

Group 0 contains gases that are not reactive called the noble gases, they are not reactive because they have a full outer shell of electrons.

22
Q

What are properties of metals?

A
  • Usually solids
  • High melting points
  • Electrical conductors
  • Thermal conductors
  • Shiny
  • High density
  • Strong
  • Oxides are alkaline
  • Malleable and ductile
23
Q

What are properties of non metals?

A
  • Solids, liquids and gases
  • low melting points
  • Electrical insulators
  • Are NOT thermal conductors
  • Dull
  • low density
  • weak
  • oxides are acidic
  • not malleable and not ductile
