reactions Flashcards
What are acids?
Assets are proton donors
What are bases?
Bases are proton acceptor
What is an alkali?
An alkaline is a soluble base that produces OH- ions when added to water
What are strong acids?
Acids that fully dissociate for example hydrochloric acid sulfuric acid producing lots of H+ ions
What are weak acids?
Acids that only partially dissociate in and produce H+ ions, like ethanolic acid and carboxylic acid
What p Are strong bases? Well over
what is a redox reaction
Is when loss and gain of electron both happen simultaneously in a reaction
define redox
the transfer of electrons
what is the oxidation number
the number of electrons lost gained or shared by an atom in a compound
is Mg + 2HCl -> MgCl2 +H2 OX or RE??
- this a redox reaction
- Mg is oxidised
- H is reduced
what is an oxidising agent
something that oxidises another compound or element but itself is reduced
electron acceptor
what is a reducing agent
- electron donor
something that reduces another compound or element but itself is oxidised
what is the oxidising agent and the reducing agent in the following:
Zn + 2HCl -> ZnCl2 +H2
Zn has been oxidised as its ox num goes from 0-2+ Zn is the reducing agent
- H has been reduced as it ox num goes from +1-0 HCl is the oxidising agent
what is the oxidation number of H
+1 but if with metals it is -1
what is the oxidation number of Zn in a compound
+2
what is the oxidation number of Ag in a compound
+1
what is the ox number of F
-1
what happens when O forms a compound with F
then the ox num of F remains -1 but the ox num of O will change and this is what you must calculate
