electrons bonding and structure Flashcards
why are electrons not draw into the atom
they have fixed energies so even though they are attracted to the nucleus they are not drawn into it.
what are the 4 sub shells and how many electrons can they hold
s=2
p=6
d=10
f=14
why are orbitals?
. a region where an electron is likely to be found
. an orbital can hold unto 2 electrons with opposite spins
what is the shape of s and p orbitals
S = spherical
P = elongated dumbbell
what is spin
- electrons are negatively charged to when in the same orbital the repel each other
- this gives them a property called spin
- so electrons in the same orbitals have opposite spins to minimise repulsion
what is the electronic configuration of Cr
1S2, 2S2 ,2P6, 3S2, 3P6, 3D5, 4S1
what is the electronic configuration of Cu
1S2, 2S2, 2P6,
how is the periodic table split into 4 blocks
group 1+2 =3 s block
transition metals = d block
groups 3-8 =-5 p block
lanthindies and actinides = f block
