Reaction Feasibility Flashcards
What is
The standard enthalpy formation
The enthalpy change when one mole of a
substance is formed from its elements in their standard states.
Whats the
Standard state of a substance!!
its most stable state at a pressure of 1 atmosphere
and at a specified temperature, usually taken as 298 K
What is entropy
The phases of matter
Temperatures affect on it
The measure of the degree of disorder in a system
Gases have high disorder, solids have low disorder
High temperatures increase disorder and therefore entropy
The first law of thermodynamics
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only altered in form.
The second law of thermodynamics
states that the total entropy of a reaction system and
its surroundings always increases for a spontaneous process.
WHat does
heat energy in a reaction system do
- When its released from the system it increases the entropy
of the surroundings(exothermic) - Heat energy absorbed by the reaction system from the surroundings decreases the entropy of the surroundings. (endothermic)
The third law of thermodynamics states
that the entropy of a perfect crystal at 0 K is zero.
Feasibile Reaction
Does not need any energy from its surroundings to occur, tends
towards the products rather than the reactants.
What does not determine reaction rate
The order of reaction
When does a reaction slow as it proceeds
in all reactions
