Reaction eated/kinetics Flashcards
What does the rate of a chemical reaction normally depend on?
The concentrations of the reactants
Why are orders of reaction used to do?
To relate the rate of a reaction to the reacting species
rate equation
rate=k[A]
to the power of the order
if doubling concentration doubles rate then it would be to the power of 1
If doubling concentration quadruples rate then it would be to the power of 2
how do you work out the overall order of a reaction?
the sum of the powers to which the concentrations of the reactants are raised in the rate equations
What is the only way of determining the order of a reaction?
experimental data
How do reactions usually occur?
by a series of steps called a reaction mechanism
What is the rate of reaction dependent on?
the slowest step->rate determining step
overall reaction order and unit of k
1st: s-1
2nd: l mol-1 s-1
3rd: l2 mol-1 s-1
4th- l3 mol-3 s-1
