amines Flashcards
What are amines?
organic derivatives of ammonia in which one or more hydrogen atoms of ammonia has ben replaced by an alkyl group
How can amines be classified?
as primary, secondary or tertiary according to the number of alkyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom
What to amines react with to form what?
with acids to form salts
What types of amines display H bonding? What is the result of this?
primary and secondary but not tertiary. As a result, primary and secondary amines have higher bp points than isometric tertiary amines
Which amine molecules can H bonding with water molecules and what does this explain?
primary, secondary and tertiary
This explains the appreciable solubility of the shorter chain length amines in water
What are amines like ammonia?
weak bases
They dissociate to a slight extent in aqueous solution.
The nitrogen atoms has a lone pair of electrons which can accept a proton from water, producing hydroxide ions
