RE Resit Flashcards
Two reason Brit Milah ceremonies are important
One reason Brit Milah ceremonies are important for Jews us that it reminds them of the Covenant with Abraham when Isaac was 8 days old, Abraham was commanded to circumcise him, this is the “seal of the Covenant”.
Another reason Brit Milah is important for Jews is that is ensures the continuation of the ritual. A chair is set aside for the prophet Elijah so he can oversee the continuation of this ritual.
Two reasons Pesach is important for Jews.
One reason celebrating Pesah is important for Jews is that is shows God is willing to bless and save them as a nation. This is shown when God commanded them to sacrifice a lamband put the blood on the posts of the door. Through this, the Angel of death passed over and firstborn sons were spared.
Another reason is because it marks the birth of their freedom from Slavery, God commanded Moses to liberate his people which shows they are Gods chosen people. During Pesach they remember people who are still enslaved today.
Kosher food laws are still important today as when they were written. Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against
Many Jews agree that Kosher food laws are important today as when they were written as they are a symbol of obedience and identity to God.
Following these laws forms the Mitzvot found in the Tenakh. It is stated in Exodus that “you must obey decrees”. Following the food laws ensures you are following the Mitzvot which pleases the Almighty.
These are strong arguments since they are part of the written law. They are commandments given by God and must be followed by Jews to ensure a healthy relationship with the Almighty.
On the Other hand, people may believe Kosher food laws are outdated in todays society. It can be argued that food safety and fresheness of food is no longer a problem. although, this rejects the belief that the Kosher food laws were given by God which therefore proves it cannot be outdated.
Furthermore, some may believe following these food laws is unnecessary and expensive as people cant always afford separate sinks and fridges making it outdated in todays society. However, individually wrapped foods are becoming more popular eliminating the need for separate sinks and fridges.
In conclusion, Jewish food laws are just as relevant today as
when they were written as they were given by God and is more a sign of identity and obedience rather than food safety.
