Integrative medicine
Approach to medicine that combines biomed and CAM

Chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation and massage

Existence of a diversity of medical perspectives
Mind-body interventions
Patient support groups, meditation prayer, spiritual healing, therapies that use creative outlets (e.g. art, music, dance, etc.)

Professionalization
- Practitioners adhere to set of legal requirements to create uniformly regulated standard of quality
- Allows professions to asset legitimacy and competence amid other vocations
Pull factor
Pulled to CAM b/c treatments are compatible w/ world views and personal beliefs
Push factor
Pushed toward CAM b/c of dissatisfaction w/ conventional medicine
Quackery
Giving false, unfounded impression of using scientific method and rationale
Reiki
- Originated in Japan
- Basis that person may feel unwell as a result of low/problematic life force energy
- Use hands to manipulate energy, encouraging person’s life force to flow smoothly
Social constructionism
Theory that holds that knowledge, definitions and social roles aren’t fixed/inherent but are dynamic product of society (e.g. gender roles)
Subtle/bio-field energy
Life force energy that causes sensations like heat, tingling and vibrations when healing
Body paradigm
- Works through biologic mechanisms
Therapeutic relationships
Assume that relationship b/w practitioner and client is inherently beneficial and acts as catalyst for self-healing
Vitalism
Concept that human life is a result of universal/spiritual energy force
