Allegory
A story with two or more levels of meaning. One literal and one symbolical.
Antithesis
Opposite. A clear contrast between two ideas.
Alliteration
The repition of sounds in two or more neighboring words. Done for emphasis.
Allusion
A brief reference to literature, geographical location, historical events, legends, myths, religions, traditions, or popculture.
Ambiguity
The multiple meanings, intentional or unintentional, of a word, phrase, symbol or passage.
Apostrophe
A figure of speech that directly refers to an imaginary person or thing.
Colloquial
Using slang in a speech or writing.
Connotation
The implied or suggested meaning of a word.
Denotation
The dictionary definition of a word.
Diction
Word choice. Formal, informal, ornate or plain.
Didactic
A text used for teaching or instruction.
