RBC Disorders Flashcards
0
Q
Functions of B12.
A
Conversion of methyl malonyl CoA to succinyl CoA
Synthesis of methionine from homocysteine
1
Q
Plummer-Vinson syndrome.
A
Microcytic hypochromic anemia
Atrophied glossitis
Esophageal webs (can lead to pharyngeal carcinoma)
2
Q
B12 deficiency.
A
Pernicious anemia
Gastrectomy
Ileal resection
Tapeworm infestation
3
Q
Lab diagnosis pernicious anemia.
A
Macrocytic RBCs Howell-Jolly bodies (residues in RBCs) Hyper segmented neutrophils (> 5 lobes) Nucleated RBCs Increased MCV Increased methylmalonic acid Increased cellularity in bone marrow
4
Q
Folate deficiency.
A
Can be caused by methothrexate (chemo) a frolic acid antagonist
Increased homocysteine but normal methylmalonic acid
No neurological symptoms
5
Q
Causes of sideroblastic anemia.
A
X-linked ALA syndrome MDS; can give rise to AML Chronic alcoholism Drugs B6 deficiency Lead poisoning
6
Q
Hereditary spherocytosis.
A
Mutation in ankyrin or spectrin
RBCs become spherical and can get trapped in splenic sinusoids leading to hemolytic crisis
Splenectomy
