what do ray diagrams show?
ray diagrams are drawings that show the direction light travels after it leaves the source.
what happens to light when it strikes an object?
it is transmitted, absorbed and reflected
what is a diffuse reflection
light reflects off a rough surface, scattering in different directions
what is regular reflection
light reflects off a smooth surface, rays stay parallel
what is a penumbra
the area of partial shadow from a non-point light source.
what is an umbra?
the part of a shadow where all light rays from the source are blocked
what determines the size of a shadow
the size of a shadow depends on the size of the object and its distance from the light source
what is an opaque object
opaque objects absorb and reflect light but do not transmit it
what is a translucent material?
a material, like frosted glass, that transmits some light but doesn’t allow u to see through clearly
what is a transparent material?
a material, like clear glass, that transmits light freely and absorbs and reflects very little light
