rationale and objectives of the UN’s SDGs Flashcards
5 areas of importance for the SDGs
People - end hunger in all forms and ensure dignity and equality
Partnership - Implement the agenda through a solid global partnership
Planet - protect our planet’s natural resources and climate for future generations
Prosperity - ensure prosperous and fulfilling lives in harmony with nature
Peace - foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies
What are the SDG’s?
WHO - United Nations, member countries, leaders and some other non-government organizations aiming to make the world a better place
WHAT - 17 SDGS and 169 targets were set
WHEN - began in 2016 but developed in 2015 and aiming to be achieved by 2030
WHERE - developed at the UN Summit - September 2015 in New York
WHY - to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice and address climate change, while ensuring that no-one is left behind.
SDG rationale - reason 1
The Millennium development goals (MDGs) finished in 2015 and had achieved significant gains. As a result, a new set of goals were needed to continue the work that the MDG’s started, such as eliminating poverty.
SDG rationale - reason 2
Progress in all areas was uneven with the poor and the most disadvantaged groups left behind in terms of progress. Thus indicating work still needed to be done to ensure all people experience improvements in human development.
SDG rationale - reason 3
New global challenges had emerged that needed to be considered, to ensure sustainable improvement in human development. These included climate change, conflict and mass migration and have the capacity to undermine many achievements made through the MDG’s.
The objectives of the SDG’s
End extreme poverty
Fight inequality and injustice
Tackle Climate Change
Why is end extreme poverty important?
- Is important as hundreds of millions of people still live in extreme poverty which means that they are less-unable to afford basic resources such as foods, safe water, housing and healthcare, contributing to a high number of preventable deaths, particularly among children. Ending extreme poverty will mean people can access the resources required for a decent standard of living
- Is important as it’s a leading cause of death of millions of people, particularly children, globally. Ending extreme poverty will assist in achieving equity and enable people to lead productive lives around the world as more poverty-related deaths occur in low income countries.
Why is fight inequality and injustice important?
- Is important as millions of people around the world face persecution due to factors such as sex, religion and race, decreasing their ability to lead a happy and healthy life, achieve life’s goals and develop to their full potential.
- Is important as millions of people, particularly females, do not have access to choice and freedoms such as education and employment, reducing their ability to lead lives they value and to participate fully in the life of their community.
Why is tackle climate change important?
- Is important as climate change has emerged as one of the most significant issues of our time, all living things rely on the environment for basic resources and climate change has the potential to destroy these resources globally
- Is important as climate change can contribute to more extreme weather events such s floods and heat waves. This can impact millions of people worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries, from working productively to escape poverty and live a long healthy life reducing premature mortality
