Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy Flashcards
What is Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy?
A type of cognitive therapy that focuses on resolving emotional and behavioural problems
Who first used REBT?
Albert Ellis
What is the goal of REBT?
To change irrational beliefs to more rational ones
What did Ellis propose?
Ellis proposed that each of us holds a unique set of assumptions about ourselves and our world that guide us through life and determine our reactions to the various situations we encounter
What are basic irrational assumptions?
Some people’s assumptions are largely irrational, guiding them to act and react in inappropriate ways that prejudice their chances of happiness and success
According to Ellis, what are the common irrational assumptions?
- The idea that one should be thoroughly competent at everything
- The idea that it is catastrophic when things are not the way you want them to be
- The idea that people have no control over their happiness
- The idea that you need someone stronger than yourself to depend on
- The idea that your history greatly influences your present life
- The idea that there is a perfect solution to human problems, and it’s a disaster if you don’t find
Who can benefit from REBT?
Depression, anxiety, addictive behaviours, phobias, procrastination, disorder eating habits, sleep problems and people with overwhelming feelings of anger, guilt, shame, or rage
