Rates, Types, Balancing Reations Flashcards
Physical change
a characteristic of matter that you can observe or measure without changing the indentity of the matter: (changing the states of matter)
Chemical change
A change in matter in which the substances that make up the matter change into other substances with different chemical and physical properties. (Foaming, fizzing, temperature change, color change, fire)
Endothermic
Chemical reactions that absorb thermal energy
Exothermicchemic
Chemical reactions that release thermal energy
Catalyst
Substance that increased the reaction rate
Inhibitor
Substance that decreases the reaction rate
Increases reaction rate
Surface area, concentration/pressure, temperature
Synthesis
Two or more substances combine to form a new compound. Ca + O2 –> CaO
Decomposition
One compound breaks down and forms two or more substances AlCl3 –> Al + Cl
Combustion
A chemical reaction in which a substance combines with oxygen and releases energy CH4 + O2 –> CO2,+ H2O
Single replacement
One element replaces another element in a compound Mg + HCL –> MgCl2 + H2
Double replacement
Two or more substances switch, forming new compound BaBr2 + Na2So4 + BaSo4 + NaBr
Ca + O2 –> CaO
2Ca + O2 –> 2CaO2
AlCl3 + Al + Cl2
2AlCl3 + 2Al + 3Cl2
