Rates Of Reaction And Equilibrium Flashcards
What is rate
Rate is a measure of the change that happens in a single unit of time
Which factors are important in determining the rate of reaction?
Surface area, temperature, concentration,catalyst
What is equilibrium
That state in which both reactants and products are present in concentrations which have no further tendency to change with time.
What is an acid
An H+ donor, turns litmus paper red, pH of 0-7
Definition of a strong acid
A strong acid completely ionizes(dissociates) in a solution
Example: hydrochloride acid(HCl)
Definition of a weak acid
A weak acid dissociates incompletely, releasing only some of its hydrogen atoms into the solution
Example: carbonic acid(H2CO3)
What is an alkali
Alkalis are soluble based which produce OH-, turn litmus paper blue, pH 7-14
What is a strong alkali
A strong alkali is completely ionised(pH14)
Example:sodium hydroxide(NaOH)
What is a weak alkali
A weak alkali is only partly ionised(pH11-12)
Example: ammonia NH3
What are some common household acids and bases
Citric acid(C6H8O7):citrus fruits, artificial flavouring Hydrochloride acid(HCl): stomach acid Carbonic acid(H2CO3): soft drinks
Neutralisation
The cancelling out of an acid and base. The reaction of H+ with OH- ions in solution to form water.
