rates of reaction Flashcards
How do you measure the rate of a reaction?
- measure rate a reactant is used up
- measure rate product is formed
What are 2 common practical methods for determining rate of reaction?
- collect gas produced
- observed colour change
In collision theory, explain sufficient and insufficient energy.
If sufficient - they will react.
If insufficient - collision won’t result in chemical change.
What are the 3 key factors affecting rate of a reaction?
- concentration
- temperature
- surface area
Surface area increases as…
Particle size decreases.
What do catalysts do?
- speed up rate of reaction without themselves being altered
- lower activation energy
What do enzymes and glucose form?
Carbon dioxide and ethanol.
What is an exo vs endothermic reaction?
Exo - more energy given out than absorbed to make bonds (-)
Endo - more energy absorbed than released to break bonds (+)
What’s the method for effect of surface area?
- Measure 5g of large marble chips into conical flask
- Measure 50cm3 of hydrochloric acid into measuring cylinder
- Add hydrochloric acid to conical flask and start timer
- Record volume of co2 produced every 10 seconds until 100cm3 has been collected
- Repeat for medium and small
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy the colliding particles need in order to react?
