Rates of Reaction Flashcards

1
Q

Temperature

A

Heating a substance makes its particles move more rapidly and collide more rapidly. This causes the rate of reaction to increase, as bonds between the particles are broken and new ones are more easily formed with the particles.

Q

Concentration

A

Increasing the concentration will mean there are more particles, there are more collisions and therefore a higher reaction rate.

Q

Stirring

A

By stirring or mixing, the products of the reaction will be removed and replaced with more particles of reactants, this will maintain the rate of reaction.

Q

Surface Area

A

An increase in the surface area (Can be done by breaking a substance into smaller pieces) provides a larger surface area on which reactions can occur, this causes an increase in the rate of reaction

Q

Catalyst

A

A catalyst is a chemical that can speed up a chemical reaction but is still present once the reaction has finished. The catalysts in living things are called enzymes. Enzymes in the human body help to break down food and make important chemicals such as proteins.
