Chemical, definitions Flashcards
Acid
a substance that produces hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water
e.g. H2SO4 (Sulfuric acid)
Base
a substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH–) when dissolved in water
E.g. MgOH (Magnesium hydroxide)
Alkaline
describes the solution made when a base is dissolved
Neutral
neither acidic or basic
Ion
an atom that has gained or lost electrons to become electrically charged
Ionic compound
a substance made up of positive and negative ions
Cation
a positively charged ion
Anion
a negatively charged ion
Polyatomic
having many atoms
Product
a substance produced by a chemical reaction
Reactant
the initial substance of a chemical reaction
Law of conservation of mass
the law that states that atoms cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical reaction
Salt
ionic compounds formed by the chemical reaction of an acid with another element or compound
Soluble
able to dissolve
Insoluble
does not dissolve
Precipitate
the insoluble product of a precipitation reaction
Rate of reaction
how fast a chemical reaction proceeds
Enzyme
a biological catalyst
