Rate of reaction + Equilibrium Flashcards
Concentration
An increase of concentration means the number of particles per volume is increased.
This increases the frequency of particle collisions.
This will increase the rate of reaction.
Pressure
If the volume of a gas is decreased, there are more particles per volume.
This increases the likelihood of particle collisions.
This will increase the rate of reaction.
State of subdivision
If the surface area is increased more particles are exposed at the surface and can participate in collisions.
This increases the likelihood of particle collisions.
This will increase the rate of reaction.
Catalyst
A catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy.
This means that a larger proportion of particles are able to overcome activation energy.
So a larger proportion of collisions are successful.
This leads to a faster rate of reaction.
Temperature
An increase in temperature will lead to an increase in the average kinetic energy of particles.
Particles move with a greater average velocity so the frequency of collisions increases.
As the average kinetic energy of particles increases, a larger proportion of particles has sufficient energy to overcome activation energy.
This leads to an increased number of successful collisions and therefore an increase in reaction rate.
