Rapid Microbial Testing Flashcards
Immuno=basey assays
Tests that utilize products of the immune system to detect the presence of a substance via a protein (antigen/antibody)
How does the Group-A Strep Test work?
The strip has anti-GAS antibodies on one end (with a dye), which will change colors when Strep A antigens bind with the strip.
What does the control region of the Strep Test have?
Fixed antibodies that will bind to dye-labeled antibodies regardless if they are bound to a specific region
What does the control region of the strep test being higher than the test region ensure?
It ensures that both samples have fully travelled across the test region and the antibodies used in the test region haven’t been destroyed
If a strep test strip doesn’t have the top control line, is it valid?
No
How does the rapid Staph test work?
the latex beads agglutinate when a specific antigen is present
What does a positive rapid staph test look like?
The test region is agglutinated, and the Negative Control region is NOT agglutinated
