Abduction
To move a joint or extremity away from the body’s midline
Adduction
To move a joint or extremity toward the body’s midline
Rotation, Internal
To turn a joint or extremity on its axis toward the body’s midline
Rotation, External
To turn a joint or extremity on its axis away from the body’s midline
Flexion
To decrease the angle between two bones
Lateral flexion
To bend a joint to one side and decrease the angle between two bones
Palmer flexion
To bend the wrist forward
Plantar flexion
To bend the foot downward (also called hyperextension of the ankle)
Dorsiflexion of the wrist
To bend the wrist backward (also called hyperextension of the wrist)
Dorsiflexion of the ankle
To bend the foot up, toward the leg
Extension
To straighten a joint
Hyperextension
To move a joint past normal extension
Supination
To place the body, foot, or Palm up
Pronation
To place the body, foot, or palm down
Opposition
To touch the thumb to each finger
Circumduction
To move a joint in widening circles
Inversion
To turn the foot in
Eversion
To turn the foot out
Radial deviation
To tilt an upright hand toward its thumb
Ulnar deviation
To tilt an upright hand toward its little finger
