Randomisation techniques Flashcards
What is simple randomisation?
Simple randomisation is where subjects are assigned to treatment or control groups by chance.
This reduces allocation bias and unknown possible factors
What is block randomisation
Where subjects are placed into blocks, so there is an equal number of differnet study groups
What is stratified randomisation
Participant characteristics are balanced in each group
What is cluster randomisation
When the randomisation is not based on a group of individuals but rather a cluster that pre-exists, e.g. a whole GP practice.
Loss in statistical power and complexity in design and analysis
What is adaptive randomisation
Randomisation as the study progresses, in response to how people are responding
