What do we call things that are used to simulate gut conditions.
Bile Salts
What is blood agar
An agar used to find out which organisms produce hemolysins .
A clear zone around the around the colonies is characteristic of what type of hemolysis.
β-hemolysis
What would we expect to see of an organism that expresses α-hemolysis.
Greenish zone around the bacterial colonies as the cell produces oxygen.
What would you expect of an organism that expresses γ-hemolysis
No zone around the colonies.
An agar used to distinguish between lactose fermenting and non lactose fermenting bacteria.
MacConkey Agar
What are coliforms
Gram negative enterics that ferment lactose
What would you see when a Coliform grows on a MacConkey Agar
The Agar would be Pink-Purple as acids from fermenting lactose are made.
A bacteria placed in a MacConkey agar turns white. Is the bacteria a lactose Fermenter or not.
It is NOT a lactose fermenter.
What is Mannitol
A carbohydrate that is a carbon source for some bacteria
What do we use a Mannitol Salt Agar for.
Used to differentiate organisms that can withstand a high salt concentration.
