Q

pros of sla

A

The parts have a very good surface finish that is similar to injection moulded
components
• Parts can be mechanically and chemically smoothed as well as painted,
coated, etc.
• Large build volumes available
Support structures can be easier to remove by doing so
before final curing in the UV oven
• The available materials can mimic traditional engineering
polymers
• The process energy input is low when compared to thermal
AM systems (mW laser powers)

Q

• Ultrasonic Consolidation (UC)

A

uses ultrasonic
frequency (≥ 20 kHz) oscillations that are locally
applied to metal foil materials, held together under
pressure, to create a solid-state weld.

Bonding Stages

A
  1. Asperity collapse
  2. Partial oxide disruption creates
    atomically clean surfaces and
    localised deformation
  3. Intimate contact between clean
    metal surfaces occurs creating
    true metallurgical bonds by
    atomic-level forces across the
    clean metal contact area

Q

c) The Material jetting process uses two actuation methods. Describe the advantages and
disadvantages of the two methods.

A

Thermal jetting
Print heads are cheaper
Burnt material on the heating element reducing lifetime and performance of print
head
Thermal cycling may lead to degradation of the material and loss of the desired
functional properties.
Piezoelectric
Allows a wider variety of materials as there is no requirement for a volatile
component
Allow more viscous materials
