What is toxoplasmosis?
Infection of ‘Toxoplasma gondii’ protozoa
Infects via GI tract. Contact from raw meat or cat faecaes
The oocysts release trophozoites which migrate round body —> eye, brain, muscle
Usually asymptomatic unless immunocompromised
If someone had toxoplasmosis, how would they present
Usually asymptomatic
Or mild, resembling infectious mononucleosis: fever, malaise, lymphadenopathy
Could be severe: menigoencephalitis, myocarditis
Investigation of choice for toxoplasmosis
Serology
Treatment for toxoplasmosis if severe
Pyrimethamine and sulphadiazine
ECG changes indicating acute pericarditis?
Saddle shaped ST elevation
PR depression- most specific for pericarditis
Management of acute pericarditis.
Treat underlying cause
Combo of NSAIDS and colchicine
Teenage boy with paler patches on skin after sun?
Pityriasis versicolor
An overgrowth of Malassezia yeast
Most common in young, makes
Patches of discolouration, mainly trunk
May be pale, brown, pink, can be flaky/itchy
Tx: topical antifungals e.g. ketoconazole shampoo
