What is pernicious anemia?
A type of megaloblastic anemia
- lack of B12 due to poor absorption from gut
- due to loss of gastric parietal cells
- -> therefore cannot make intrinsic factor.
What is megaloblastic anemia?
Type of anemia due to inhibition of DNA synthesis in RBC production.
- Leads to enlarged, but fewer, RBCs
- most often due to deficiency of B12 or folate
Which cells are responsible for producing HCl in the stomach?
Gastric parietal cells
What is the function of red pulp in the spleen?
removes old RBCs and debris
What is the function of the white pulp in the spleen?
Immunological role (many lymphocytes involved)
What is a reticular cell?
Type of fibroblast that synthesizes Type III collagen (which forms reticular fibres)
What is found in the red pulp of the spleen?
splenic cords & sinuses
What divides the lobules in the thymus?
Trabeculae
