Aerobic Activities
• Level of Intensity Defined: Intensity can be estimated using a scale of ___ to ____, where 0 is sitting and the highest possible level of effort is 10.
0 to 10
Aerobic Activities
• Moderate Intensity – a person doing moderate intensity aerobic activity can talk, but not sing, during the activity. This is activity equivalent to a ___ or ___ on a 10 point scale. Examples: Brisk walking 3mph or faster but not race walking), water aerobics, bicycle riding slower than 10mph, tennis (doubles), ballroom dancing, general gardening.
5 or 6
Aerobic Activities
• Vigorous Intensity – a person doing vigorous intensity aerobic activity cant say more than a few words without pausing for a breath. This is activity equivalent to a ___ or ___ on a 10 point scale. Examples: Race walking, jogging, running, swimming laps, tennis (singles), aerobic dancing, bicycling 10 mph or faster, jumping rope, heavy gardening, hiking uphill or with a heavy backpack
7 or 8
• Muscle Strengthening – should be done ___ or more days a week. Muscle strengthening activities do not count toward the aerobic activity total. All major muscle groups should be worked. These are the legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms. Exercises for each muscle group should be repeated 8 to 12 times per set. As exercises become easier, increase the weight or do another set. Examples: Lifting weights, working with resistance bands, and doing exercises that use body weight for resistance (Pushups, sit ups)
2
• Flexibility: Each time you perform aerobic or strength training activities, take an extra ___ minutes to stretch the major muscle groups; hold stretches for ____-____ seconds and repeat each side 3-4 times.
10 minutes
10-30 seconds
ACSM 2009
• The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) states that moderate intensity physical activity between _______ minutes/week is effective in preventing weight gain, but will provide only modest weight loss. Physical activity greater than ______ minutes/week is recommended for weight loss and the prevention of weight regain.
150-250 minutes
250 minutes/week

What type of turn _______.
Except in a narrow channel, the coxswain should make the turn to the side that the person
fell overboard. This will kick the stern of the boat away from the person preventing injury.
This maneuver can be modified for use by twin-propeller boats. Twin-propeller boats are
pivoted by putting one engine ahead and the other in reverse. With a single-propeller boat,
the rudder should be placed hard over and additional power applied, if conditions permit.
(see Figure 16-5)
Destroyer Turn
An advantage of the ________ turn is that it is the fastest recovery method. A disadvantage
is that it is not meant for use by a single propeller boat. The Anderson turn is performed
using the following procedures:
Anderson
The final straight leg approach of the _____ turn helps for a more calculable approach.
The race track turn is performed using the following procedures
Race track
If an individual falls overboard during periods of darkness or restricted visibility, and the
exact time of the incident is unknown, a maneuver known as the ______ turn should be
used to search for the person overboard. The advantage of the ______ turn, when
properly executed, is that it will position the boat on a reciprocal course on its exact original
track. This allows the search to commence on the track where the victim fell over, not from
a parallel track. Of course, as soon as the alarm is spread the general person overboard
procedures will be initiated.
Williamson turn
The weakest point in a line is the knot or splice. They can reduce the BS of a line as much
as ___ to ___ percent. A splice, however, is stronger than a knot.
50 to 60
The ______ is a versatile knot and can be used anytime a temporary eye is needed in the end
of a line. It also works for tying two lines securely together, though there are better knots for
this. An advantage of _____ is that they do not slip or jam easily.
bowline
_______ are used for temporarily securing a line to objects such as a ring or eye. One of their
advantages is their ease in untying. The half hitch is the smallest and simplest hitch. It
should be tied only to objects having a right-hand pull. Since a single half hitch may slip
easily, care should be taken in cases where it will encounter stress.
Hitches
A _______ is used to attach one line to another, where the second line is under a strain
and cannot be bent.
rolling hitch
A ________ is preferred for securing a heaving line to a towline. It is the best all-around
knot for securing a line to a ring or spar. Correctly tied, a _______ will not jam or loosen.
However, if it is not tied tight enough, it may work itself out. Reinforcing it with a half hitch
will prevent this from happening.
clove hitch
A ______ knot may be used to prevent an unwhipped line from unlaying.
crown knot
The _______ bend, or anchor bend is used to secure a line to a ring in an anchor or mooring
buoy. It can also be tied around a spar., or anchor bend is used to secure a line to a ring in an anchor or mooring
buoy. It can also be tied around a spar.
fisherman’s
The ______ hitch is used for temporarily shortening a piece of line. It consists of two
bights of line, side-by-side, with a half hitch at either end.
sheepshank
A _____ knot is an overhand knot with an extra twist. It will prevent the end of a line
from feeding through a block or fairlead when loads are involved. It is also easier to untie
and does not jam as hard as the over hand knot.
