Random Flashcards
What are the three types of bonding
ionic bonding, covalent bonding, metallic bonding
What is metallic bonding
metallic bonding is a bond formed between a positive metal ion and a sea of electrons of delocalized electrons.
Chemical properties of metals
Most metals are chemically unstable and will react with the oxygen in the air to form oxides
What is an alloy
An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements of which at least one is a metal.
Why do metals have high boiling and melting points
Metals have high boiling and melting points because a lot of energy is needed to overcome the strong electrostatic forces. The atoms in metals are also closely packed so they need more energy to move them apart and convert them into liquids.
Why are metals good conductors of heat and electricity
Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity because the delocalized electrons are free allowing them to be able to move freely throughout the metal and carry an electric current throughout.
What is an allotrope
Allotropes are two or more different structural forms of the same element in the same physical state possessing the same chemical properties but different physical properties
Why do metals conduct electricity
Metals conduct electricity by allowing the delocalized electrons to move across the layers carrying an electric charge.
What is a crystal lattice
A crystal lattice is a regularly repeating arrangement of ions, atoms or molecules.
What happens in a ionic lattice
In an ionic lattice - the electrostatic attractive forces between the positive and negative ions act in all directions.
These forces are very strong so it takes a lot of energy to overcome them.
What is mole
Mole is the amount of substance that matter contains
What is Avogadro’s constant
6.022*10^23
What is relative atomic mass
Relative atomic mass is the average mass of an electron compared to 1/12 the mass of a carbon-12 isotope
