Properties of Simple Molecular Structures Flashcards
Why do they have low melting points
They have low melting points because the forces between the molecules are weak.
Why are they soft
They are soft because when scratched it doesn’t take much energy to overcome the weak forces between the molecule.
Why do they not dissolve easy in water
They do not dissolve in water because the water molecules cannot form strong enough bonds with the molecules to separate them from each other
Why do they dissolve in non-polar organic solvents
They dissolve in non-polar organic solvents because the forces between the solvent and the iodine or sulphur molecules are stronger than those between iodine and sulphur molecules themselves
Why do they not conduct electricity
They do not conduct electricity when molten or solid because they have neither ions nor electrons that can move to carry an electric charge.
