WHEN IS THE 20X USED?
Twenty-foot Extension Ladders are used to
reach second story windows, one story roofs,
and some second story fire escapes
HOW MANY SECTIONS IS IN THE 20X?
They consist of
two 12-foot sections.
FOR THE 20X WHICH DIRECTION IS YOUR BASE?
Approach ladder with main section up
Base(shoes) to your left, toward objective
WHICH RUNGS DO YOU GRASP?
Using both hands, natural grip
At 4th and 6th rung from the top
Palms facing each other
Hands against outside beam
HOW DO YOU LIFT LADDER?
Rock over ladder Curl ladder to form window, looking between 4th and 6th rungs Using legs to lift With back straight With outside arm to near vertical Use inside hand to assist by spanning inside beam (do not ground outside shoe maintaining 1” to 1½” off ground)
HOW MANY STEPS DO YOU TAKE?
Take 3 to 4 steps
Bring ladder to near horizontal by sliding
inside beam on inside shoulder to find
proper balance point
HOW DO YOU CARRY LADDER?
On right shoulder
Top shoe slightly below eye level
WHICH WAY DO YOU PIVOT LADDER ONCE GROUNDED?
To the left, stepping forward with right foot
Follow pivot, rungs parallel to objective
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU STEP IN FRONT OF LADDER?
From convenient side While spanning both beams Using both hands Natural grip At shoulder height
HOW DO YOU LOCK TH CONVIENT LEG?
With convenient leg, lock knee around main
beam
With same foot, lock around rear of shoe,
approximately 30 to 45 degrees to base
Other foot is positioned 18” to 24” in front of
ladder, in a comfortable position
HOW DO YOU RAISE THE FLY SECTION?
Using both hands Thumbs up, natural grip Slightly above head level Elbows high Forearms in contact with beams
WHICH DIRECTION DO YOU LEAN LADDER WHILE RAISING FLY/
Lean ladder slightly toward objective While continually watching fly section Pull down on halyard, hand over hand at head level Maintain slight elbow contact with beams
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN LOCKING DOGS?
Use same hand as footed shoe Slap leg verbally stating “Locking Leg” Reach down to capture halyard With natural grip, thumb up, pull upward on halyard, Release tension on upper hand to allow dogs to slide down and lock Assure dogs are locked with a visual check and verbally state, “Dogs Locked”
HOW DO YOU ADJUST A 20 X LADDER?
Capture halyard and convenient rung
With opposite hand, secure halyard
between thumb and index finger
Hold halyard firm, against convenient rung
Using pinch grip, palm up
CAN YOU MOVE THE BASE OUT?
Look down at base, prior to lowering ladder
(Note: The base shall not be moved out
while fly is extended)
