LP # 144 LADDERS AND EVOLUTIONS -TERMS Flashcards
What is another name for the 14 foot extension ladder?
- Baby Bangor – 14 foot extension ladder
WHAT IS ANOTHER NAME FOR THE 50’ EXT?
- Bangor Ladder – 50 foot extension ladder, no longer carried on Department apparatus
WHAT IS THE BOTTOM OF THE LADDER CALLED?
BASE
WHAT LADDER COMPONENT INDICATE TRUE BASE ON STRAIGT LADDERS?
- Base, True – Indicated only by the tie rods on straight ladders, which will be under the rungs of a raised ladder when the true base is down
WHAT ARE THE BEAM BOLTS?
BEAM BOLTS HOLD THE BEAMS TOGETHER.
WHAT ARE THE BEAMS?
The principal structural assemblies of ladders
WHAT IS THE MAIN BEAM?
Main Beam – Principal structural member of a beam assembly on trussed ladder
WHAT IS THE TRUSS BEAM?
Truss Beam – The secondary structural member of a beam assembly on a trussed ladder
WHAT IS A BEAM RAISE?
Beam Raise – A method of raising a ladder on edge. One beam above the other and rungs vertical at the beginning of the raise
WHAT ARE THE BRACES IN A LADDER?
Braces – Strengthening strips attached diagonally from main beam to truss beam in some types of trussed ladders.
WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF CURLING?
Curling – Used to raise one member extension ladder from rest position. Member assumes squat position beside ladder, both feet against beam. Grasps proper rungs, hand against outside beam, elbows outside knees. Member rocks over ladder, locks arms, returns to squat position with ladder chest high and rungs parallel to body
WHAT IS A REVERSE CURL?
Reverse Curl – Used to return one member extension ladder to rest position
WHAT ARE THE DOGS?
Also called “Locks”, Positive locking devices which keep the fly section from retracting once raised
WHAT IS A FLAT RAISE?
Flat Raise – Method of raising a ladder with shoes of both beams on ground and rungs parallel to the ground throughout the raise
WHAT IS THE FRONT OF LADDER?
Climbing side of ladder, the side away from the building when in position for climbing. Rung side on LAFD ladders
WHO IS THE FRONT MEMBER?
Member working front side of ladder
WHAT IS FOOTING?
Methods used to secure the base of ladder from undesired movement
WHAT IS FOOTING ON A FLAT RAISE?
Footing (Flat raise) – Place the ball of each foot well up on the shoes of the ladder with the heels resting firmly on the ground. Place hands on knees in a slight crouch. Grasp the beams as they come within reach while maintaining balance
WHAT IS FOOTING ON A BEAM RAISE?
Footing (Beam raise) – With the foot tip on inner edge, place the foot at right angle to the ladder beam; inner edge of sole on the ground, bottom of foot against the ladder shoe; grasp top truss beam with one hand, with the other hand grasp top main beam to assist in raising
WHAT ARE THE GUIDES?
Guides – Longitudinal strips on inner side of beam assemblies on most extension ladders, which guide the fly section and hold the fly to the main section. The guides on the Baby Bangor ladders are metal angles attached to the top of the beam assemblies on the main section
WHAT IS A HALYARD?
A ROPE USED TO EXTEND THE FLY SECTION OF A LADDER.
WHAT ARE THE HOOKS ON A LADDER
FOLDING STEEL MEMBERS THAT SECURE A ROOF LADDER FOR CLIMBING.
WHAT IS THE INSIDE HAND OR FOOT?
The hand (or foot) that is closer to the ladder. Also, the hand (or foot) that is closer to the other member of a two-member team when working side by side
WHAT IS THE KNEE FOOT LOCK POSITION?
Knee/Foot Lock Position – Used to secure one beam of a ladder when raising or lowering the fly section. The knee is lodged against one side of the beam and the instep of the foot is hooked around the opposite side of the same beam. For safety, avoid placing toe of locked foot under fly section
LADDERS BUILT IN ONE SECTION ARE CALLED?
CALLED STRAIGHT LADDERS
WHAT IS AN EXTENTION LADDER?
Extension – A ladder built in two or more sections which can be extended to increase its length
WHAT IS THE MAIN SECTION IN AN EXT LADDER?
THIS IS THE LOWEST OR BOTTOM SECTION OF AN EXT LADDER.
WHAT IS THE CENTER SECTION OF AN EXT LADDER?
THE CENTER OF AN EXT LADDER.
WHAT IS THE FLY SECTION OF A LADDER
Extension section of a ladder, usually refers to the top section
DEFINE A ROOF LADDER?
Straight ladder with folding hooks at the top
