Forest floor
Only a few shrubs with thin leaves are found here. These litter the floor with leaves. Most tree roots are big and cover the floor. (0m - 15m)
Shrub layer
This layer is dark and gloomy with almost no vegetation. It floods easily in heavy rainfalls and isn’t very warm. (15m - 25m)
Understory
The vegetation is more sparse but grows quickly. Almost no temperature change, moist and still air, rain drips from the canopy, breeze is rare even in storms. (25m - 30m)
Canopy
Formed by the crowns of tall trees and they have flowers and fruit. They have to survive extreme sunshine, heavy rain and tropical storms. (30m - 35m).
Emergent
Layer with the tallest trees. They pop out of the canopy and stand out. (35m - 45m).
Slash and burn
Slash and burn is deforestation method used for agriculture. First, trees are wiped out then the remaining vegetation is burnt down. This sounds bad but a layer of nutrient filled surface to grow crops on. Unfortunately the layer won’t last forever so farmers will take out more trees and this is bad.
Logging deforestation.
Logging is the process of sawing down trees into suitable lengths. The timber is then made into furniture or flooring. Companies such as Starbucks and Mac Donalds use logging deforestation. As timber demands go up logging will continue.
