Rainforests Flashcards
1
Q
What is the soil like in the rainforest?
A
- Not very fertile
- Thin layer of fertile soil where dead leaves decompose
- Nutrient cycling is very rapid due to humid conditions
- Due to heavy rainfall, nutrients are quickly washed away.
2
Q
What are the layers of the rainforest?
A
- Shrub layer- dark with small plants
- Under canopy- small trees compete for light in the dark
- Main canopy- tall trees 50% of life
- Emergent- tallest trees
3
Q
What are some adaptations they have?
A
- Drip tips have pointy leaves so water runs off quickly
- Buttress roots have large roots, to support the tree
4
Q
How does the rainforest maintain soil health?
A
- Rich fertile top layer, rapidly leaf fall and recycle nutrients
- Can be used to grow maize which is the staple diet for local people
5
Q
How is the rainforest important for goods and services?
A
- Can produce nuts, local diet
- Medicines like the rosy periwinkle from Madagascar
- Raw materials like timber for furniture
6
Q
What are the impacts of soil erosion?
A
- Soil is left bare
- Nutrient cycle stops no plants are shedding
- Cannot support life, not fertile
- No trees to hold the soil together so it is easily eroded
7
Q
What are the impacts of climate change?
A
- Fewer trees and plants, less carbon dioxide
- Global warming
- Climate change
