Rainforest adaptions Flashcards
Explain why trees who rapidly grow upwards are adapted to the rainforest conditions.
This means they will be able to grow to the light faster meaning they will eventually get more light
Give 5 ways in which plants are adapted to rainforest conditions.
.Trees grow rapidly upwards .Many leaves at the top .Emergents especially have flexible trunks .buttress roots .epiphytes
Explain why trees with many leaves at the top are adapted to the rainforest conditions.
There isn’t much light lower down, so having leaves there is pointless, instead having leaves at the top where there is loads of light, means those trees can get more light
Explain why tall trees who have flexible trunks are adapted to the rainforest conditions.
At 50m above ground, winds can be strong, so having a flexible trunk means they can withstand the strong winds
Explain why plants with buttress roots are adapted to the rainforest conditions.
As the nutrients is only on the top layer of the soil, and there is already enough water in the soil, roots do not need to grow far down. Also these roots are very strong and give the tree stability
Explain how epiphytes are adapted to the rainforest conditions.
They grow symbiotically on other trees, they can grow up the tree to reach the light, and their roots (lianas) can drape far down on the tree
What is a buttress root?
Roots that are very thick and high up, not deep
What is the name to the plant species that grow symbiotically with rainforest trees?
Epiphytes
Give 4 ways in which rainforest animals are adapted to the rainforest conditions.
.Many animals have long claws
.Many forest floor animals are nocturnal
.Many animals are very agile
.Many animals are insectivorous
Explain how animals with long claws are adapted to the rainforest conditions.
They can climb the trees very well
Giving an example, how are nocturnal animals better adapted to rainforest floor conditions?
Busy baby (squirrel) have large eyes and ears, very acute senses to combat the very low light conditions
Explain why animals who are agile are adapted to the rainforest conditions with an example
They can glide around the trees (flying fox) or by swinging and jumping (monkeys) to escape predators or catch prey.
Explain how insectivorous animals are are adapted to the rainforest conditions.
Most of the animals in the different layers (mainly the floor) are insects, so there are always plenty of insects.
