Co - The Forelands Erosion Flashcards
Which 2 processes are responsible for the formation of caves and arches?
Abrasion and Hydraulic action
Where is The Forelands located?
East Purbeck - Dorset
What is Abrasion?
When bits of sand and rock smash into the cliffs, slowly weakening them
What is Hydraulic action?
Air becomes trapped in gaps in rocks, then when a wave smashes into them, the air is compressed, slowly weakening the rock
How are stacks made?
When overhanging land from arches can’t support itself, and so collapses, separating 2 pieces of land, the one not connected to the mainlands is the stack
What is the example of a stack in The Forelands?
Old Harry
How are ‘wave-cut notches’ formed?
When sides of stacks begin to be undercut
How is a ‘wave-cut notch’ formed?
When abrasion and hydraulic action erodes the cliffs more at high tide, the lower land isn’t eroded as fast, and so a wave-cut platform is formed
What is the order of the costal erosion at ‘The Forelands’?
Caves > (A/H.A.) > Arches > (Collapses) > Stacks > (A/H.A.) > Wave-cut notch > (A/H.A.) > Wave-cut platform
