Raine et al Flashcards
What is the aim of Raine et al study?
Wanted to use brain scanning technology to identify brain impairments in people charged with murder who had pleaded NGRI. The researchers hypothesised that the brain scans would show dysfunctions in areas linked in previous research to violence.
Who were the ppts and how many were there in Raine et al study?
41- murderers, 41- non murderers
What was the independent variable in Raine et al study?
Murderer or non-murderer
What is the dependent variable used in Raine et al study?
The glucose metabolism in specific brain areas
How many women were in the Raine et al study?
2
What were the ppts free from 2 weeks prior to the Raine et al study?
Medication
What were the murderers matched on in Raine et al study?
Sex, age and ethnicity
How many ppts had schizophrenia Raine et al study?
6
What type of scan was used for the brains in Raine et al study?
PET
What did the continuous performance task (CPT) include in Raine et al study?
Identifying targets on a screen and pressing a button during a 32 minute period after the injection
How many pictures were taken through the brain at 10mm intervals in Raine et al study?
10
What was the activity like in the murderers cortical regions in Raine et al study?
Significantly lower glucose metabolism than controls in the following cortical regions: lateral and medial prefrontal areas, left angular gyrus and left and right superior parietal areas. Murderers showed higher metabolism than controls in the occipital lobe, a brain area not previously linked to violence.
What was the activity like in the murderers subcortical regions in Raine et al study?
Murderes had lower glucose metabolism than controls in the following subcortical regions- corpus callosum, left amygdala and left medial temporal lobe (including the hippocampus) as indicated in previous research. Murderers had greater activity in the right amydala, the right medial temporal lobe and the right thalamus (not previously implicated in violent behaviour)
