Radiology Flashcards
What types of radiographs require a red Rinn holder?
Bitewings
don’t have to change configuration for left and right
What types of radiographs require a blue Rinn holder?
anterior periapicals (don't have to change configuration for upper and lower)
What types of radiographs require a yellow Rinn holder?
posterior periapicals
what size of film do u use for a bitewing?
size 2
what size of film do you use for an anterior periapical?
size 0 or 1
what size of film do you use for a posterior periapical?
size 2
what side of the film packet faces the x-ray machine?
white side
when using a yellow rinn holder for posterior periapicals what quadrants can be x-ray’d without changing the configuration of the holder?
Upper right & lower left
upper left & lower right
describe how you would set up a yellow rinn holder for an upper right periapical (and lower left)
Hold the metal rod in your right hand with 2 metal prongs facing away from your hands
Slide the bite block on to the prongs
attach the ring with the true square side first on to the metal rod
White dot should be ….
Where should the white dot be located for a anterior periapical using blue Rinn holder?
At the bottom and should be on the corner that goes into the bite block first
Where should the white dot be located for a bitewing using red Rinn holder?
with the film packet horizontal it should be At the top towards the palate
Where should the white dot be located for a posterior periapical using yellow Rinn holder?
……
what does the dose of the x-ray depend on? (4)
Size and build of the patient
number & spacing of the teeth
the tooth/teeth being radiographed
x-ray unit being used
Describe how you set up the collimator head in relation to the patient/Rinn holders (3)
Push the ring close to the patient’s face but not touching
Ensure the rotation of collimator head matches the grooves on the Ring of the Rinn holder
(there’s a vertical groove for PA’s and a horizontal groove)
Ensure the line on the collimator head is parallel to the metal rod of the rinn holder - assess from the front
Describe the set up for an occlusal radiograph. (5)
Have patient in the correct position
No holder required - ask patient to gently bite down on the occlusal film packet with white side facing the x-ray source
ensure dot is facing up and is out of the mouth
ensure vertical angulation is 60 degrees downwards
place tube head above the bridge of nose
when do you know to stop pressing the exposure button?
when the warning sound stops
what is patient position for occlusal radiographs? (3)
ala-tragus line and maxillary occlusal plane parallel to the floor
Midsagittal plane perpendicular to the floor
Interpupillary line parallel to the floor
What must you ask the patient before taking an OPT? (3)
DOB
ADDRESS
had an opt recently/elsewhere
what must the patient remove before an OPT? (6)
Outdoor jackets jewellery - earrings hearing aids removable appliances in mouth hair accessories
- ensure no bulky hair styles
Describe how the patient should be positioned for an OPT (6)
(adjust the height so its a little higher than required)
get patient to;
stand upright with straight neck
place chin on the chin rest
Feet slightly apart
hands on the handles
and bite the peg at the groove with upper and lower front teeth
ask patient to stay still and push tongue up on to the roof of their mouth.
Describe the machine position (superimposed lines) 3
Ensure the vertical line is down the middle of the face
the horizontal line is along the Frankfort plane
ensure the canine line is superimposed on to the canine
