Perio Classifications Flashcards
Describe how you would assess a patient with a BPE of 1?
(Band completely visible with Bleeding and plaque present)
Assess the extent of bleeding
< 10% = clinical gingival health
10-30% = Localised gingivitis
> 30% = generalised gingivitis
Describe how you would assess a patient with a BPE of 2?
(Band completely visible with Bleeding and plaque retentive factors)
Assess the extent of bleeding
< 10% = clinical gingival health
10-30% = Localised gingivitis
> 30% = generalised gingivitis
and diagnosis should comment on plaque retentive factors present
Describe how you would assess a patient with a BPE of 3?
(Band partially visible)
Take radiographs
start initial therapy and reassess after 3 months
After 3 months take a localised 6ppc
Pockets < 4mm and no radiographic signs on perio bone loss = treat as you would code 0,1,2
Pockets ≥ 4mm with radiographic signs of perio bone loss = treat as you would code 4
Describe how you would assess a patient with a BPE of 4?
(Band disappears)
Take radiographs
GDH say Start treatment and do a 6ppc for whole mouth post treatment
assess if patient has:
Molar incisor pattern
Localised perio = <30%
Generalised perio = ≥ 30%
Stage, grade, risk factor assessment and current disease status
How do you stage a perio patient?
Use the site with the maximum inter proximal bone loss and asses the severity.
Define a stage 1/mild perio patient.
Bone loss is < 15% (2mm) at worst site
Define a stage 2 perio patient.
Bone loss reaches coronal 3rd at worst site
Define a stage 3 perio patient.
Bone loss reaches mid 3rd at worst site
Define a stage 4 perio patient.
Bone loss reaches apical 3rd at worst site - or lost a tooth to perio
if a patient has lost teeth to perio previously what stage do they get?
stage 4
How do we grade perio patients?
Use the site with the worst percentage bone loss and divide by the patients age
Define a grade A perio patient.
< 0.5
Define a grade B perio patient.
0.5 - 1
Define a grade C perio patient.
> 1
How do we measure the extent of the perio disease? (3)
- Molar incisor pattern
- <30% = localised
- ≥ 30% = generalised
