RADIOGRAPHS Flashcards
What is the slice/area in which structures will appear most sharply and clearly on a radiograph?
the focal trough
what occurs if structures are outside of the focal trough?
Structures will appear faint and out of focus
Why do incisors not show well on panoramic radiographs?
the focal trough is thinner in the incisor region
if structures are sitting lingual to the focal trough how will they appear?
they appear MAGNIFIED and BROADER
if structures are sitting buccal to the focal trough how will they appear?
they appear SMALLER/less magnified and NARROWER
what radiation dose does a panoramic radiograph give off? (approx.)
20 μSv
what radiation dose does a periapical/bitewing radiograph give off? (approx.)
4 μSv
how long does a full panoramic radiograph typically take?
10-15s
when a patient is getting a panoramic radiograph taken, what things must they do?
- stay still
- press tongue up against palate
- not talk or swallow
what is the main cause for problems with panoramic radiographs?
movement artefacts (patient moves when the radiograph is being taken)
what is a Stafne defect?
an idiopathic bone cavity (shows as a dark radiolucency on the bone usually)
