Radioactivity Flashcards
What particle exerts the electrostatic forces of repulsion
Protons
What is strong nuclear force
Force of attraction that holds the nucleus together
What is spontaneous transmutation
When an unstable nucleus becomes stable by chaning into a different element releasing a particle as it does so
A radioactive atom emits radiation this can be claffied into two classes
Energy and particles
When does beta minus decay happen
When an unstable atom has a relatively large number of neutrons, the neutron splits into a proton and an electron
What is beta positive decay
Happens when an unstable atom has too many protons a proton in nucleus decays into a neutron and a postron
what is gamma decay
This is when unstable atomic nuclei dissipate excess energy by spontaneously emitting gamma rays (typically after alpha and beta decay)
